Hi, I have a friend who has put on weight during her pregnancy. And now she wants to do a gastric band surgery because she is very miserable at seeing her actual weight. Her husband did not bother about it but he thinks that if she keeps on putting weight like this she will fall ill. I had advised her not to do this because i don't think it is safe to do surgery to lose weight, but I don’t go for this gastric surgery. Please help, is the gastric surgery safe?

Every surgery has a risk involved in it. Further risks would involve her medical condition. Has she had on going problems associated with the added weight? Diabetes, joint problems, heart problems? What documented weightloss programs has she done already? What worked? What did not? What are the benefits of such a surgery other than losing weight and feeling better? Is self esteem an issue? Is there depression that is involved asided from the weight gain?
There are lots of questions and answers to be found. But yes, there is always a risk.

She needs to address the emotional issues involving her overeating before she tackles surgery which has risks. She will just put the weight back on if she does not deal with this now.

I'll never understand the concept of gastic banding.. i mean how does permanently starving yourself solve the issue. Deal with the source of the problem whether it is mental or physical. Eat healthy and get regular exercise. That's all it takes. No more processed foods. Lower the salt and fat intake.
